Living in Tuscany has definitely some perks, like taking few minutes by train to get to magical places and be transported into a medieval fairytale.
That's exactly what you experience visiting Lucca, a city so beautiful it almost looks unreal.
To me it is the epitomy of Italian life: the perfect blend of ancient and modern, fashion, art and nature and a slow and relaxed lifestyle. That's why last sunday I felt an urge to just hop on a train and get there, I even managed to convince a group of friends to join me on a photographic tour of the city.
The plan is to have lunch and then just walk it off on the medieval Walls that surround Lucca; we really thought it would be a quiet day since italians usually spend sundays at home with their families but we didn't consider that the beautiful weather of the first days of autumn would attract many wanderers and tourists like ourselves. So we decide to go straight for Trattoria da Leo, a small but extremely famous family restaurant in the center and we had a fantastic vegetable soup with a glass of local red wine, while around us the entire room was filled with one huge family that talked and laughed from table to table.
We get out of the restaurant and the weather is perfect. Not a cloud in the sky, the air is warm and inviting to walk and explore the narrow streets of Lucca, where you can easily get lost and find amazing treasures of beauty. Especially churches.
Every time you make a turn, in Lucca, you will most likely bump into a one. The legend says that, at one point in history, inside the city walls there were a hundred churches! Most of theme were harmed during wars or turned into theaters and museums, like San Cristoforo, which hosts a reproduction of Da Vinci's machines. But you definitely still feel like being surrounded by dozens of them.
As we walk we have another surprise: it happened to be the one weekend of the month in which the city hosts a huge antique market that takes up the whole historic center. Streets and squares are filled up with stands selling pictures, old books, vinyl records, vintage postcards, clothes and accessories, decadent pieces of art and history.
Time for a coffee break in Piazza Anfiteatro then straight to the Walls!
The walk is long and we are surrounded by bycicles and people running, cute old couples and hordes of teenagers sitting on the Walls and making out, like little lovebirds. How to blame them?
The city looks like a movie set, built just for them and their love stories.

It's time to go back home, we have been walking for 6 hours and we feel a little tired. We take the first train to Pisa and watch the pictures just taken planning the next daytrip. Who knows where it will be?
