Maybe you don't know this, but every year the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), releases a list of all the best beaches of the Country.
The main requirements for the mention are:
- clean water
- eco-sustainability
- tourist infrastructures
so it's safe to say that planning a trip to anyone of these holiday resorts will be satisfactory.
The awarded beaches are 236 so here's a list of my personal favourites, to help you chose wisely!
1) My heart can't make me start from anywhere but my hometown, the best beach in the province of Catanzaro, the beautiful Soverato. Here the sandy beaches and the cristal clear water (and a lot of food) will make your holidays in Calabria.
The town is called "The pearl of the Ionian sea" for a reason...
Remember: these are the most recommended beaches from an environmental and sustainable point of view, but all over the Italian coast there are thousands of beaches and resorts that will amaze you.
2) Going further north from the Ionian coast, there is another important holiday destination, apreciated both by italians and foreigners: Salento. Here, in the deep south of Apulia, nature, architecture and art are combined to offer the best vacation at a reasonable price, both for families or backpackers.
Salento's blue flag is Torre dell'Orso, one of the most iconic bays of the coast.
3) In Sicily, I must mention the Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily. These islands are famous not only for the wild nature of their landscapes but also for the architecture, severely restricted to fit perfectly into the scenery.
The most famous and definitely a must-see is Lipari.
4) Also in the South, we can't forget Campania's jewel, the Amalfi Coast and more precisely the Instagramers' paradise, Positano. Since the '50 and '60s the town has always been the most exclusive and fashionable town of the coast.
5) Another impressive view worth a little adventorous boat trip is the Blue Grotto in Capri, a cave mouth that goes from complete darkness to a sparkling blue light, reflecting on the cave walls.
Isn't it amazing?
6) Going north, on the ligurian coast, we find Lerici, surrounded by the Mediterranean scrub.
Imagine swimming in this clear water while smelling the scent of the pines...
7) Let's not forget Tuscany! Famous for its iconic countryside, it also offers beautiful coastal sceneries, especially around the Argentario. An example? Porto Santo Stefano and...
8) Castiglione della Pescaia
9) The other big island, Sardinia, offers an infinite list of magnificent beaches, from the most well-knowed to the almost secret and "wild" ones. But between these, I need to mention two: first La Maddalena, a smaller island in front of Sardinia's northern coast, a true touristic paradise.
10) ...and last but definitely not least, in the province of Sassari, the famous Castelsardo in the Nort-West of the island, at the east end of the renowned Gulf of Asinara.
These are just 10 of the countless holiday resorts of the italian coast, for a complete list of all the "blue flag" awarded beaches, please visit This Page.
Let me know which one is your favourite!
