Tourists: when you're in Italy, please, eat good Local food.

By Italians on the move - 09:08

Many would say that there's no need to say this, especially Italians.
We have the presumption that our cuisine is the most admired and loved in the whole world, that everyone would pay whatever just to taste the delicious products of our Country.

Maybe this was true until we started to sell out.
Italian food became first a status symbol and then a trend. Millions of bad italian restaurants were opened around the globe, sometimes by people who never even tasted real italian food and so many culinary stereotypes were born and started to catch on.

And bad restaurants based in Italy are not to forget!

Italian cities are filled with tourist-traps that sell food of the lowest quality, appealing to those said stereotypes that can really make an impression on unprepared visitors. So, after few bad experience, many of them turn to multinational fast food restaurants, believing that they will have a better deal.
Or maybe it's just an awful habit.
Anyway, there are a few tips that can really help you, if you are traveling through italy, to have a memorable food experience, learning to eat like an italian.

If you are on the run or you really like fast food, you can enjoy the local focaccia, panini and all sorts of fried goods.

Sometimes a nice pasta dish can fill you up and make you happy for the whole day.

If there's a waiter outside of a restaurant, inviting you to go inside... that's generally a tourist-trap!

Please, feel free to wander through local food markets. They can give you a boost of happiness with their vibrant colors and smells and you can buy fresh local fruits and veggies for a nice healthy snack.

Italian flag-colored pasta and olive oil bottles shaped like the leaning tower of Pisa are usually not good quality products.
Every region and every province of Italy has its own specialty, from sweets to wine and liquors: ask locals, like your hotel manager, what are the typical products of the area!

As a general rule, don't be afraid to ask Italians about their culinary traditions, we will be more than happy to tell you everything we know and we will probably invite you for a coffee to make more time to be very very detailed.

See you in Italy!

  1. The best part about going to Italy is the local food. You are very right about tourists and their habits. Lots of Americans will rely on McDonalds. Visitors must try out the markets and ask what the locals eat. Thank you for the great advice.
